As for finishes, there are typically four to five finishes to choose from depending on the paint brand, the distinguishing factors of each finish are the luster and how easy it is to clean. Choosing the right finish for your project depends on the look, durability, and ambiance that you are looking for. The main types of finishes are a flat finish, an eggshell finish, a satin finish, a semi-gloss finish, and a high-gloss finish.

The Flat finish is the least shiny finish available; it is opaque and has a matte look. It is important to note that a flat finish is only available in water-based latex paint and hence doesn’t clean easily.

An eggshell finish provides low luster so it’s often used for decorative finishes. It cleans up easier than a flat finish but not as great as more shiny finish.

The Satin finish is the most popular sheen used. Satin is washable, but scrubbing isn’t recommended so this finish is best used in woodwork, walls, doors, and hallways.

A semi-gloss finish will give the room a subtle shine, it’s very easily cleaned and hence good for moldings, doors, windows, kitchens, and bathrooms.

High-gloss finish provides a very shiny and polished look. It’s stain resistant and can be scrubbed and easily cleaned, because of this it’s highly recommended for the most used rooms and ones that easily get dirty such as kitchens, bathrooms, toddler rooms, etc.
